1998,我經歷了人生一連串最重大的失敗,首先,在選舉中以荒唐的得票數落選。同時,由於我的錯誤,不得不結束一段非常美滿、長達五年的愛情。我所投資的事業,也面臨危機。好幾個月,我繭居在家中,足不出戶,自己想像自己是一隻四腳朝天的烏龜,覺得被朋友、社會所拋棄。一點都不像人們所暱稱的“小霸王’’。
感謝好友蔡伸章,適時介紹了這本書給我。閱讀這本書的過程,讓我做了徹徹底底的自我反省,總結出自己為人處事許許多多的幼稚錯誤。同時,也給自己進行了一段「愛的心理治療」,讓我走出黑暗、沮喪的深谷。
從形式上來看,這本書只是一本普通的格言集,在舊書攤【一打一毛錢】的quotation books。但是,這本書其實是一本有關生命議題的BIBLE。
作者芬齊克花了三十年的時間,閱讀數百本書,從古今的智者無數的話語中篩選,主題都集中在“生命的意義’’、“如何讓人生活得快樂’’。
他還找了二十五位朋友組成【二十五人委員會】共同來參與討論、編排,最後才完成這本七百則、體例完整的【永恆的智慧】。
芬齊克自稱是一個“飽經挫折的哲學家’’,出版這本書的目的只是為了和人結緣分享。窮其一生,他創造出這本書,在版權頁卻聲明“這本書中的箴言,不須出版者同意,可以以任何形式複製,只要目的是為了增進生命的快樂與熱情’’。
我實在很讚嘆芬齊克這個人,也相信這本書會改變很多人的生命。這一本書確實是全世界真理的寶藏。1999,我將它翻譯出來。本書以中英對照,如果有翻譯不夠信、達、雅的地方,希望能獲得糾正。
